For all the people in California, California is mostly open space. Drive just far enough off the freeways and highways, just far enough outside the big metropolitan areas and the space expands and becomes vast. If you are just far enough outside of the cities even the edge of the Suburbs open up into open space. These are some images from the open space within walking distance the area of Vacaville where I am staying. In previously living in California and in my subsequent visits after leaving I took for granted the empty space, I didn't see the beauty in it. Now after 10 years in cities and 6 1/2 years in NYC the open space is welcome, even when crispy and dry.
